Venice's Grand Canal at night. There were so many people on this bridge taking pictures, we had to fight for space.
This was the plaza that opened out to us as we left the train station coming into Venice.
This is the same Grand Canal, but on the other side of the bridge. What a difference - this side was empty of traffic.
Another shot of Venice's Grand Canal at night.
The side of a restaurant in Venice at night. The canal water isn't particularly clear, but I suppose its all part of the charm.
Another night shot of a restaurant in Venice. There really were stairs into the water all over the place.
The ducal palace in Venice, at night. I like this shot, the way the palace appears as a darker outline against the sky.
Venice just after sunset, taken from a gondola.
A cruise ship being guided along the canal in Venice. We were shocked at the size of the ships they permitted along the canal - I'm not sure the ship would have room to turn around if it needed to at an inconvenient spot.
The broader waterways in Venice had wooden markers indicating particular lanes for travel. The Italians being who they are, they followed them or didn't as suited their tastes.
Impressive that the Venicians would put in little alcoves in the canals for loading and unloading of passengers.
Narrower canals had plants growing all the way across.
I hadn't seen red peppers sold in strings like these before.
Plenty of masks for sale in Venice.
Begging was about typical for a european town. It didn't seem to matter much that this was such a tourist city.
Gondoleers were decked out in full uniform, and all gondolas looked clearly like gondolas. I imagine there was some ordinances to that effect. Here is a gondoleer's hat, and the standard red velvet interior of the gondolas.
More venician masks.
Once you got away from the more touristy areas, things calmed down quite a bit. This is a shot of the main canal on the island on which the glass blowers do their work.
Public drinking water source in Venice, right next to a canal.
This is a pretty classic composition - cat in window, next to flowers.
Evening arrives in Venice.
Evening in Venice.
The sun shines on a church in Venice.
I enjoy these arched walkways
Contrasting a gondola and a cruise ship cruising along the grand canal in Venice.
Gondolas along the Grand Canal in Venice.
A large modern sailing ship crosses in front of an old world church in Venice.
Lights from the bridge reflect off of the river, with Heidelberg castle in the background.
I'm not sure what is in these odd shaped bottles. Strawberry flavored vinegar?
Candles inside Heidelberg cathedral.
Altar in Heidelberg cathedral.
This clock caught my eye; it seems fitting against the style of the roof.
The Neckar river, Heidelberg castle, and Heidelberg cathedral at night.
This is one of my favorite photos of Heidelberg at night.
